Relieved to note that my initial impressions of Twitter seem to be widespread amongst my new 506 colleagues; also relieved that others are finding that a lot of time is being ‘squandered’ on 2.0 R&D that was to be allocated to more ‘academic’ pursuits like required reading. Ironic that these rapid-fire media are so time consuming! On past experience, if there was a user manual I’d be ignoring it & experimenting anyway; I have accumulated a few facts, procedures and conventions such as RT and hash tag use and tiny url or bit urls (must bookmark), but I have little facility yet and luckily no phone connection to exploit that instant Twitter impulse. Marshall Breeding’s point re using professional judgement and a professional ‘voice’ for Tweets is a good one. If tweets simply add to already abundant info white noise, it is no wonder the fall-off rate is so significant.

2.0 @ work

Inclined to think wiki an excellent idea for sharing knowledge and documenting cataloguing decisions within my team. Also thinking of implementing Twitter group for team and interested colleagues for PD. 2.0 was proposed as a developmental activity in itself, but many colleagues have only completed half of the course or less. Only blog awareness and occasional participation now seems widespread. Perhaps concentrating on one other social media tool may be more productive and encourage staff to return to the course for broader exploration.
