Musings on half a week of tweets and fb stuff
Not only random contacts in Twitter but Flickr as well. What should I make of ‘obsidian blacknight mc?’ except he/she knows some geology! First impulse is to message back asking their real name which really doesn’t tell you anything either! Quite unnerving when there is absolutely no profile … goes against the “no talking to strangers” motto … but PR would have it that there are or should be no strangers in the social media community. If 30% of people quit Twitter after 60 days, it demonstrates their lack of commitment to that virtual ‘community’ or their frustration with disjointed over-frequent word grabs or their frustration with being unable to glance at more than a small portion of the links and comments offered for their attention or gleeful discovery
of a better tool for their purposes??? Twitter is a conveniently portable info source over any populationbut over delivers info with the danger of useful info being obscured by the dross. Its use may teach rapid discernment in the world of virtual info comparable to the best intentions of info lit instruction, or it may simply continue the work the Muppets are accused of starting of encouraging short attention spans; time to flit around but not to evaluate or manage the info. … both real
