Almost Easter and the mornings grow ever darker. There'll be a brief respite after daylight saving drops back and then the days close in … very suitable for working in the digital world.
Last night discovered Mt St Michel in sl but explored very little before coming up against a seemingly insuperable dead end corner. Unable to fly up, down or backwards? … noone to be seen … gave up and returned “home” to wander the deserted courtyards and experiment with falling in the water! Not very productive, but did preview several sites from the inworld search facility … some cool places to visit but will have to renovate appearance and learn how to create and interact.
May still be convinced there is a point to sl conferencing after reading Susie Andretta (2009) on Transliteracy (‘Take a walk on the wild side’ IFLA session 94. Literacy and Reading and Information Literacy. Andretta underlines the irony of presenting a textual paper where arguments must be linear, on the subject of new literacies primarily defined by their interactivity and participative nature:
‘Transliteracy is an umbrella term encompassing different literacies and multiple
communication channels that require active participation with and across a range of
platforms, and embracing both linear and non-linear messages.’ (p. 3)
The concept of transliteracy goes beyond conflicts of print, digital, audio and visual literacies and may be a more useful framework for considering the difficult notion of traditional lifestyle/ landscape literacies than the discrete strands of multiliteracies. Out of the theoretical and into the professional environment, librarians and teachers:
‘interpret transliteracy as a practice that enables the enhancement and the
expansion of the services they provide. In this respect they emphasise the shift across
diverse media literacies by capitalising on Web 2.0 and virtual technologies, and by
